Visitors from a European Union member state, the UK, Canada, USA or Israel, do not need a visa to enter the country. Those from EU countries and the US may stay in the country for up to 90 days in a six-month period, counting from the first date of entry. For citizens of Canada, the UK and Israel, this period is up to 30 days within a six-month period. It doesn’t matter whether you leave and re-enter the country within that period, as the total number of days is what matters. Just make sure that the passport is valid for at least three months beyond the planned period of stay in Bulgaria. Those who are not citizens of the countries listed above should obtain an entry visa in advance from the Bulgarian embassy or consulate in their country.

By law all foreign visitors must register with the authorities within 5 days of their arrival. Hotels generally take responsibility for registering their guests, so it is normal to give your passport to the hotel receptionist when checking in. Otherwise you can go in person to the regional passport office or local police station to register yourself.

If you intend to stay longer in Bulgaria you need a ‘D’-type (long term) visa, which is valid up to three months. If you plan to stay beyond the term of the ‘D’-type visa, you need to apply for a temporary residence card 7-10 days before the visa expires. This allows you to stay for up to 1 year, depending on the category. You can apply for a permanent residence card from the Ministry of International Affairs if you have been married to a Bulgarian citizen for more than 2 years; you have legally stayed in the country without interruption for 5 years; you have invested over $500 000 or other reasons, about which you can check in Bulgarian Embassy of your country.
