                                                                                  bansko, winter resort
The town of Bansko lies at the foot of the 2915 m high Mount Vihren in the scenic Pirin mountain range. Built around a medieval town centre with pretty stone buildings, traditional inns and cobbled streets, the resort has developed into the largest ski centre in Bulgaria. Bansko has the best snow record and the longest ski season (15 Dec - 15 May) of all Bulgarian ski resorts. During the last couple of years this resort is under a massive investment process with new hotels and resort facilities being under construction. The skiing area of Bansko has been improved significantly with brand new lifts and pistes. The ski pistes are located in two main ski-centres: Chalin Valog (1100-1600 m) and Shiligarnika (1700-2500 m). They are approximately 10 km above the town on the northern slopes of Pirin, and are easily accessible by the new Gondola lift which starts from Bansko. The total length of the marked pistes is 65 km.

bansko pubsThe unique combination of a well developed mountain resort and a living historical town turns Bansko into an elegant place for entertainment. The traditional Bulgarian taverns (called "Mehana"), with their exceptional charm and style offer local and European cuisine and good selection of Bulgarian wines. Most of the local "Mehanas" even offer live folk music. Discos and night clubs work without time limit, and usually close early in the morning.

Bansko is attractive throughout the four seasons of the year and there is plenty of places to see for those who are not very good in skiing. The church Sveta Troica (St. Trinity church) is a masterpiece of architecture with the ensemble of old buildings of the same name beside it. Lazar Guerman, a well-known tradesman from Bansko, is an initiator and contributor for its construction. The other interesting monument of culture is the House-museum of Neofit Rilski. He was born in 1793, and was a patriarch of the Bulgarian education and enlightenment. He studied icon-painting and later he became a monk in the Rila monastery. Tourists can also enjoy one of the most beautiful houses in the town – Velianovata. It is situated in the immediate neighborhood of Sveta Troica church. Very beautiful is the native house of the Bulgarian poet Nikola Vaptsarov. A traditional feast in Bansko is the Summer Jazz Festival with popular performers from Bulgaria. Under the dome of the Pirin sky, in the lovely nights of August one can enjoy nice jazz music.

skiingSouth of Bansko is situated the National Park Pirin included in the UNESCO list for cultural and natural sightseeing. The park is rich with its lakes, waterfalls, caves, venerable trees and historical sites. Bansko together with Dobrinishte are also famous for their mineral springs.

The basic type of transport that connects the town to the rest of the country is the bus transport. There are regular bus lines to Sofia, Blagoevgrad, Gotse Delchev and Razlog. The central bus station is modern and huge. It is located in the eastern end of the town.
